Am I eligible for renting on Airbnb in Victoria?

You may be eligible for short-term rentals in Victoria, BC if:
– your short-term rental unit is your principal dwelling unit. It can be the whole unit on occasion (for example, when you are on vacation), or up to two bedrooms in your unit with shared kitchen and living spaces.
– you own a unit where transient accommodation was a permitted use and your property was used as a short-term rental prior to September 2017.
You are not eligible for short-term rental if the unit is a self-contained dwelling unit such as a secondary or garden suite.

Do I need a business license to operate an Airbnb?

Yes, you do. You are required to obtain a business license for your short-term rental even if you plan to operate for only part of the year. Please note that all short-term rental licences must be applied for annually.

Are short-term rentals allowed in strata units?

Short-term rentals are allowed as long as you provide strata consent in your annual licence application. The City recommends that you review your strata bylaws as a first step.

How can I provide proof of principal residence?

To comply with the City’s requirements, you need to provide two documents that state your principal residence address. One of them should have a government-issued photo identification. Both documents must be current and valid. Acceptable examples include a recent utility bill, driver’s license, Medical Services Plan statement, or mail from the Canada Revenue Agency.
