If you own a tourist home, you can rent it out. But, if your property is not designated by the Town of Canmore as a tourist home – you can’t rent it out as a short-term stay.

How can you distinguish between a tourist home and a dwelling unit?

There are a few characteristics which distinguish a tourist home from a dwelling unit. These include:
• Intent: The occupant intends to stay for short-term vacation purposes as opposed to living there permanently;
• Nature: The commercial nature of the tourist home;
• Marketing: The advertising of the unit as a vacation rental on websites such as VRBO, and Airbnb; and/or,
• the use of a system of reservations, deposits, confirmations, credit cards, or other forms of electronic payment.

Where are tourist homes allowed?

The Town of Canmore has two distinct categories for Airbnb: “Hotel Condo” and “tourist home”. Each zone identified in the Land Use Bylaw provides specific requirements as to where tourist homes may or may not be allowed. In Canmore, tourist homes have been largely outlawed in residential areas due to their effects on local housing availability and affordability, as well as the overall ambiance of the neighbourhood.
